Facial Oils: A powerful, one-and-done skincare routine

Facial Oils: A powerful, one-and-done skincare routine

I was born in the 80’s and grew up in the 90’s, and back then, it was fat-free everything and oil-free skincare. Turns out we were wrong on both counts. Enjoy all the avocados and olive oil you want. Make a well-crafted facial oil your best friend when it comes to taking care of your skin. My favorite is pairing facial oil with a serum, but you can also use it as a one-and-done skincare routine.

Oil, specifically an oil called sebum, is how your skin protects itself from the environment. Sebum keeps moisture in so that your skin cells can stay calm and focus on doing healthy skin cell things such as building collagen and elastin. It also forms a protective layer to keep out bacteria, fungal spores, dirt, and pollution. Using a facial oil boosts these protective benefits and so much more!

When you wash your face, you remove the protective sebum from your skin. Your skin detects this and kicks into gear to rebuild that protective layer–a process that eats up resources and takes about 3 hours to complete. Using a facial oil immediately creates a defensive barrier and calms your skin cells so they can keep chugging along with normal operations.

Protecting your skin with an oil product also benefits all skin types. For drier skin, the oil reduces moisture loss while you’re out and about. For oily skin, a facial oil can essentially “trick” the glands in your skin that produce sebum into thinking that they don’t have to work so hard. Essentially, the facial oil stops the feedback loop that leads to an overproduction of natural skin oils.

When formulating our facial oils, I use jojoba oil as the primary ingredient. Jojoba oil is basically a plant-derived mimic of your natural skin sebum, which makes it perfect for soothing and protecting your skin. As an added bonus, it absorbs into the top layers of your skin so that you don’t feel greasy or weighed down. To boost the effectiveness and to actively treat common skin concerns, I also use ingredients like ceramides, vitamin E, and daikon seed extract to enhance all of the barrier functions. With our Repair Oil, I also use vitamin C and bakuchiol to smooth skin texture and reduce dark spots.

It’s basically a moisturizer, spot treatment, and best friend to all skin types in one beautiful product!
